Environmental impacts

Scharlab works to ensure the efficient use of available natural resources and the raw materials consumed. The facilities built in the chemical production unit were designed to reduce the company’s environmental impact.

Scharlab’s environmental responsibility policy implies compliance with all the legal requirements necessary to ensure the minimum impact of our activity on nature and environmental preservation.

Scharlab does not publicly inform third parties of the environmental impacts caused by its activities; this information may be consulted in the course of an audit.

Environmental actions

Currently, Scharlab has several environmental objectives referring to its practices as essential requirements.

  • Reduction of electricity consumption.
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions
  • Reducing the use of paper
  • Reuse of waste at source

Thanks to the implementation of sophisticated process control and visualisation software in the chemical plant, Scharlab has managed to considerably reduce electricity consumption and CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere. The emission reduction is approximately 1.3 tons of CO2 per month and an energy saving of about 3000 Kw per month.

In the warehouses and the Scharlab plant, employees work with PDAs, which means significant savings in the daily use of paper and printer toners.

Whenever possible, Scharlab opts for environmentally-friendly, sustainable raw materials.

Environmentally-friendly products and packaging

Scharlab works to supply cleaner, safer products such as Pyridine-free Aquagent® reagents or Green alternatives to common products. In addition, it takes into account the environmental conservation for all its projects.

Scharlab continually seeks cleaner, safer packaging. Proof of this is the packaging for the prepared microbiological dishes, the use of recycled cardboard in boxes for transport, the Returnable Packaging Service, the recycled cardboard boxes for its columns and chromatography products.

In addition, we want to go one step further and involve our clients in participating in environmental awareness, going hand in hand along this crucial path for society as a whole. To do this, we have launched campaigns and promotions, such as the “A new life for our packaging” promotion, these being reused with new functions in our daily lives. We want to share our vision with our clients and together build an ever more sustainable world.

Scharlab follows a strict policy of environmental responsibility and complies with all legal requirements to ensure the minimum impact of our activity on nature.

We ensure its monitoring through periodic audits and certification of the ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Standard.

Many of the products that Scharlab works with are a hazard for health and the environment, so it is essential to know the risk that their handling entails. At Scharlab, we always adopt the appropriate working methods, paying special attention to the safety pictograms and the detailed information on the safety data sheets regarding aspects such as waste management, first aid or physical-chemical data, which are of great help for product handling.

The waste from hazardous substances and the containers they come in are classified as special waste and delivered to an authorised waste manager. Special attention is paid so that these products do not reach the sewage network, and, in the event of accidental spillage, fire or uncontrolled emission of gases, the competent authority is immediately notified to minimise the impact on the environment.

We offer advice to clients who have problems or doubts about the management of waste from production, or who need information on how to act in an emergency.
