ELECTROPHORESIS

Electrophoresis is used to separate DNA, RNA or proteins using an electrical current to drive the molecules through an agarose or polyacrylamide gel or other type of matrix. Different species move at different speeds depending on their molecular weight, and so they are fixed in different positions in the gel for clear identification. This procedure is mainly used in molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry laboratories. The technique is carried out in an electrophoresis unit and needs a power supply to generate the electrical current and a UV cabinet or light to view the different molecular bands.
