PLATES

Culture plates, and especially Petri dishes, are one of the most widely used consumables in microbiology laboratories. They are usually made from plastic, round, sterile and come with a lid. Petri dishes and plates are used to hold the culture medium where the sample will be seeded to confirm the presence or absence of, or to quantify, microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts. The vents ensure that there is a slight gap between the lid and plate, which allows enough air to enter and favour the correct growth of the microorganisms. Plates are typically 90 mm in diameter, although larger and smaller diameters are available, as are square plates depending on the application.
